How to earn Skywards Miles

There are three main routes for UAE residents:

From UAE-issued co-branded credit cards

The Emirates NBD Skywards range is one direct-earning option. The Skywards Infinite earns 2 miles per USD 1 (roughly 0.54 miles per AED) on Emirates, flydubai, duty free, and eligible UAE food-delivery and car-booking apps; the Skywards Signature earns 1.5 miles per USD 1 on the same partner categories. Both post miles directly into your Skywards account with no transfer step or ratio loss.

Check each card’s current welcome offer and price an eligible upgrade before counting on the bonus.

From flying Emirates and flydubai

Emirates says earnings vary by route, fare type and cabin. Your tier can add bonus Skywards Miles. Use the Miles Calculator to check a specific flight on Emirates or flydubai.

From transfer partners

Marriott Bonvoy and Accor ALL can top up a Skywards balance. Check the transfer ratios and confirm the award is available before moving points.

What a Skywards Mile is worth

For comparing cards: DubaiPoints uses a 2 fils (AED 0.02) per mile editorial baseline. It is not a live redemption quote.

Redemption typeWhat to compare
Economy-to-Business upgradeEligible Economy fare, upgrade miles and cash charges versus the Business fare
Long-haul Business on EmiratesCheck the live award and equivalent cash fare
First on the A380Check aircraft, eligibility, availability and the full cash charge
Economy on Emirates or flydubaiCompare the award with a cash fare you would actually pay
Cash+MilesUse the cash saving and miles displayed at checkout; there is no fixed conversion rate

For booking a flight: take the cash fare you would otherwise pay, subtract the cash charges on the reward, then divide by the miles required. See the worked examples or read the valuation methodology.

Best sweet-spot redemptions

The four documented sweet spots are listed in the Programme reference block below the prose. Two of them are worth additional context:

Economy-to-business-class regional upgrade — the canonical break-even

For a regional trip from Dubai, compare the price of a paid Business ticket with an upgrade-eligible Economy fare plus the miles and any cash charges. Confirm upgrade eligibility and availability with Emirates before buying the Economy ticket.

For illustration, at our 2-fils baseline, 30,000–50,000 miles represent AED 600–1,000 for card comparisons. That arithmetic does not tell you the mileage price or how much cash an upgrade will save.

DXB → LHR in Business

Emirates lists one-way Business Classic Rewards as Flex Plus only. Check the Miles Calculator and then price your actual dates in the award search. Subtract the full cash payable on the reward from the fare you would otherwise buy, then divide the difference by the miles quoted. That is your cash-fare comparison, not our published cost basis.

Tier structure (Blue / Silver / Gold / Platinum)

Tier Miles count towards status; Skywards Miles pay for rewards. Check Emirates’ tier rules for qualification and lounge terms for access and guests.

TierQualification
BlueEntry tier
Silver25,000 Tier Miles or 25 qualifying flights
Gold50,000 Tier Miles or 50 qualifying flights
Platinum150,000 Tier Miles and at least one qualifying Business or First Class flight

Emirates says Tier Miles are earned mainly on Emirates, flydubai and eligible Emirates-marketed codeshares. Emirates NBD’s Skywards Infinite lists Silver status while the card remains active; check the bank’s current conditions before relying on it.

Transfer partners

Two hotel transfer routes published by Emirates:

  • Marriott Bonvoy → Skywards: published base ratio of 3:1. Compare the flight you can actually book with using your points for a Marriott stay.
  • Accor ALL → Skywards: 4,000 ALL Reward points convert to 2,000 Skywards Miles. Compare the flight saving with using the points directly at Accor.

For UAE bank programmes, check the transfer ratios guide and the issuer’s current terms before moving points.

Mile expiry mechanics

Per clause 9 of Emirates’ published Programme Rules, Skywards Miles are valid for three years from the date of the flight or partner transaction that earned them, and then expire on the last day of your birthday month that follows the end of that three-year period. Emirates’ own worked example: a validity period ending 15 January 2026, for a member born on 14 January, expires on 31 January 2027.

Only Platinum stops the clock. Under clause 6.10.1, Miles held by Platinum members do not expire for as long as Platinum status is retained; Emirates shows them an “Adjusted Expiry” date tied to the tier review instead. Silver and Gold do not change when Miles expire. If you drop from Platinum, Miles carrying an Adjusted Expiry date expire on that date.

Activity does not extend Skywards Miles. Earning a single new mile does not reset the expiry on older miles, unlike some competitor programmes (e.g. AAdvantage). Emirates does sell extra validity: Miles due to expire within 90 days can be extended by 12 months through its paid Extend Miles product (clause 10), at whatever price Emirates is charging at the time.

A change has been reported for miles earned from 1 June 2027. Our news report covers the move to expiry at the end of the earning month three years later. Check Emirates’ rules and the expiry shown in your account before planning a redemption.

Watch out for

  • Terms and availability can change. Look up the trip before transferring points. An indicative mileage price does not reserve a seat.
  • Taxes and carrier charges can change the answer. Compare the full cash charge on the award with the cash fare, not just the miles shown.
  • Reward pricing depends on the itinerary. Compare the actual mileage and cash charges. In Emirates Business, one-way Classic Rewards are Flex Plus only; check return itineraries separately for Saver availability.
  • Cash+Miles and Classic Rewards are different. Compare each available quote on its own terms; do not assume the same value per mile.

Is Skywards worth chasing?

  • You fly Emirates or flydubai regularly: compare the UAE earning cards if you have a realistic use for the miles before they expire.
  • You rarely fly either airline: compare a cashback card or transferable points before paying a co-brand fee.
  • You mainly fly Etihad: compare Etihad Guest for the routes you actually book.

Bottom line

Price one flight you would actually book before choosing a Skywards card. The miles are only useful if the dates, cash charges and expiry work for you.

Redemption sweet spots

  • DXB → LHR in Emirates Business

Compare a live Business Class reward quote and its cash charges with the fare you would otherwise pay. Emirates lists one-way Business Classic Rewards as Flex Plus only.

  • Short-haul GCC redemptions

For DXB → BAH/DOH/RUH, compare the live reward and fees with the equivalent cash fare. Check a return itinerary if you want to look for Saver availability.

  • Economy-to-business-class upgrades on a regional sector

For DXB → DEL/BOM/MAA, compare an upgrade-eligible Economy fare plus the quoted miles and charges with the Business fare. Check availability before you buy.

  • Emirates First on the A380

For DXB → JFK in First, check Emirates for the live miles price, taxes and eligibility. Compare the total cost with the cash fare you would otherwise buy.

Expiry policy

Under Emirates’ Programme Rules, Skywards Miles are valid for three years from the flight or partner transaction, then expire at the end of the next birthday month. Activity does not reset the clock. Miles do not expire while Platinum status is held. A change has been reported for miles earned from 1 June 2027; check Emirates’ rules and the expiry shown in your account.
