A reward ticket can cost fewer dirhams and still be a poor use of miles. Compare the cash fare you would actually pay with the total cash due on the reward, then ask how much those miles saved you.
Worked examples, not live fares. We checked the airline rules on 4 November 2026 but could not verify matched, all-in cash and reward quotes for the same flights. Every fare, mileage requirement and fee below is hypothetical. Neither example confirms seat availability.
To compare your own quotes, use the Cash or Miles calculator. For an observed fare instead of an illustration, see the Etihad Abu Dhabi–Muscat comparison.
The break-even test
- Cash saved: subtract the total cash due on the reward from the all-in cash fare.
- Value per mile: multiply the saving in AED by 100, then divide by the miles charged. The answer is in fils per mile.
- Break-even cash fare: add the cash due on the reward to what the miles are worth to you. At DubaiPoints’ editorial baseline of 2 fils per mile for Skywards and Etihad Guest, 10,000 miles count as AED 200. The baseline is for comparison; it is not an airline exchange rate.
Dubai to London Heathrow: miles above the baseline

- 105,000 Skywards Miles + AED 2,400
No travel date or seat availability was verified for these figures. Emirates route page
- Cash saved: AED 2,800. That works out to 2.67 fils per mile.
- Break-even cash fare: AED 2,400 + AED 2,100 for the miles = AED 4,500.
- Decision: if you would actually pay AED 5,200 for those flights and fare conditions, the reward clears the 2-fils baseline. If the cash fare dropped below AED 4,500 with the reward unchanged, paying cash would be better by that yardstick.
An Emirates Classic Reward is not the same as applying Cash+Miles to a paid ticket. On a Classic Reward, government and airport taxes are paid in cash; Emirates also charges carrier-imposed fees and may let you cover those charges with extra miles. Abu Dhabi to Muscat: cash below break-even

- 15,000 Etihad Guest Miles + AED 180
No travel date or seat availability was verified for these figures. Etihad route page
- Cash saved: AED 200. That works out to 1.33 fils per mile.
- Break-even cash fare: AED 180 + AED 300 for the miles = AED 480.
- Decision: at AED 380, cash comes out ahead by the 2-fils yardstick. You might still prefer to use miles if preserving cash matters more to you or your miles are close to expiry.
Etihad’s terms say its Promo seat calculator shows indicative miles and does not include taxes, fees or carrier charges. Use the full amount shown when pricing the reward, including any cash portion you choose to pay. Etihad Guest terms, §4.4.9–10
Compare the booking screens, not the headline
- Use the same flight numbers, dates, cabin, trip direction and passenger count. Check baggage and change or cancellation rules before treating the tickets as equivalent.
- Record the all-in cash fare and all the cash and miles due on the reward, at the same time. A public route calculator or a promotional “from” fare is not a matched quote.
- Consider the rewards you would earn on the paid ticket and whether you would really buy it. These examples do not price those earnings or assume you would pay more for a cabin you did not plan to book.
See the published UAE points and miles baselines before applying the calculation to a booking. For more on earning and redeeming, see the Emirates Skywards and Etihad Guest guides.
